Queeen
of Arabia and Three Sheiks
Maura, who like to be thought of as
the most beautiful and powerful queen of Arabia, had many suitors. One by one
she discarded them, until her list was reduced to just three sheiks. The three
sheiks were all euqally young and handsome. They were also rich and strong. It
was very hard to decide who would be the best of them.
One evening, Maura disguised her
self and went to the camp of the three sheiks. As they were about to have dinner,
Maura asked them for something to eat. The first gave her some left over food.
The second sheiks gave her some unappetizing camel’s tail. The third sheiks,
who was called Hakim, offered her some of the most tender and tasty meat. After
dinner, the disguised queen left the sheik’s camp.
The following day, the queen invited
the three sheiks to dinner at the palace. She ordered her servant to give each
one exactly what they had given her the evening before. Hakim, who received a
plate of delicious meat, refused to eat it if the other two sheiks could not
share it with him.
This sheiks Hakim’s act finally
convinced Queen Maura thet he was the man for her. “Without question, Hakim is
the most generous of you” she announced her choice to the sheiks. “So it is
Hakim I will marry”.
The
Legend of Lake Batur
A long time ago,
there lived on the island of Bali a giant like creature named Kbo Lwo. The
people of Bali used to say that Kbo Lwo was everything, a destroyer as well as
a creator. He was satisfied with the meal, but this meant for the Balinese
people enough food for a thousand man.
Difficulties arose for the first
timethe barns were almost empty and the new harvest was still a long way off.
This made Kbo Lwo wild with great anger. In his hunger, he destroyed all the
houses and even all the temples. It made the Balinese turn to rage. So, they
came together to plan steps to oppose this powerful giant by using his
stupidity.
They asked Kbo Lwo to build them a
very deep well, and rebuild all the houses and temples he had destroyed. After
they fed Kbo Lwo, he began to dig a deep hole. One day he had eaten too much,
he fell a sleep in the hole. The oldest man in the village gave a sign, and the
villagers began to throw the limestone they had collected before into the hole.
The limestone made the water inside the hole boiling. Kbo Lwo was buried alive.
Then the water in the well rose higher and higher until at last it over flowed
and formed Lake Batur. The mound of earth dug from the well by Kbo Lwo is known
as Mount Batur.
